How to Tell If Your Wig Is 100% Human Hair

When you're investing in a human hair wig, authenticity matters. Unfortunately, many products labeled “100% human hair” may contain synthetic blends. Here's how to tell if your wig is the real deal.

1. Perform the Burn Test (Carefully!)

Snip a small strand and burn it. Real human hair burns slowly, smells like burnt protein (like feathers), and turns to ash. Synthetic hair melts, has a plastic smell, and forms hard beads. Only perform this test on a loose strand—not the full wig!

2. Examine the Shine

Human hair has a soft, natural luster. Synthetic fibers are often overly shiny and look artificial, especially under direct light.

3. Feel the Texture

Run your fingers through the hair. Human hair feels smooth and soft. Synthetic hair often feels coarse, slippery, or plasticky.

4. Test with Water

Spray the wig lightly with water. Human hair absorbs moisture and changes texture slightly. Synthetic hair repels water and remains unchanged.

5. Use Heat Styling

Try using a flat iron on a small section. Human hair tolerates heat styling well. Synthetic blends may melt or frizz instantly.

Authentic human hair wigs are more durable, styleable, and natural-looking—always check before you buy!
